Service scope

Review the storage model, Service Tag, controller configuration, firmware, enclosure layout, drive inventory, free capacity and current storage health. Check proposed drive part numbers, form factor, capacity, interface, firmware and carrier against Dell's applicable support matrix. Investigate drives that are not detected or are unsuitable for the existing configuration. Plan approved drive or enclosure additions and the required disk group, pool and volume changes. Host-side capacity extension is included only when agreed in the scope.

Model-specific expansion rules

ME4012 and ME4024 support up to nine ME412/ME424 expansion enclosures or three ME484 expansion enclosures. Combining the ME412/ME424 enclosure family with ME484 enclosures is not supported. ME4084 supports up to three ME484 expansion enclosures. Expansion enclosures require a dual-controller ME4 configuration. Actual drive-slot limits depend on the base model and enclosure configuration.

Drive compatibility

A matching connector or physical size does not establish compatibility. Exact drive suitability must be checked before purchase or installation. Dell states that ME4 does not support drives previously deployed in an ME5 base system or an enclosure used with ME5 because of incompatible drive metadata.

Implementation and verification

Agree a change plan, maintenance window, backup readiness and recovery approach before making changes. Validate drive detection, enclosure paths, storage health and available capacity after the approved work. Review host access where included and provide a configuration handover. Expansion is subject to system health and technical feasibility; zero downtime is not guaranteed.
